CUNY Trustee Randy Mastro Dropped

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has opted not to re-appoint Randy Mastro to the CUNY Board of Trustees. Appointed in 1999 by then Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, Mastro had been one of the more anti-student/faculty trustees of the last half decade. Mastro proposed ending bilingual education for NYC immigrants when he was head of Giuliani’s task force on bilingual education. One of his more contentious moves as a CUNY Trustee was in 2001, when he introduced a motion at a CUNY Trustee meeting endorsing CUNY Chancellor Goldstein’s criticism regarding an anti-war teach-in organized by the faculty and students of CUNY. The motion passed unopposed. Mastro is replaced by Charles A. Shorter of Ernst and Young LLP.
